My Party Has a First Name it's...O.S.C.A.R...

I am at a loss...with the Olympics at end whatever will I do...When in doubt, throw a FABULOUS party!!! And what better glam event than The Oscar...

I must confess, I love award shows and The Oscars are the Olympics of award shows. This year is looking to be a fantastic show, great movies nominated, fabulous stars walking the red carpet. Oh the pomp and circumstance, can’t wait...

So here are a few ideas and tips to help your throw a Fabulous Oscar Party...

GUEST LIST- This by far is always my top priority with any party. Be sure to invite a collection of people that you actually “like”...Life is too short & we work too hard to spend time with people because we feel “we have too”...Invite people into your home that you enjoy and want to be around. This will add a vibe to your party that no food or decor could ever create.

SEATING
- As we all know this show does go on...and on...and on...So be sure to have lot’s of comfortable seating, all with great views of the television. If you have the space be sure to set up a smaller set in the kitchen area as you don’t want to miss a minute of the action. FOOD & BEVI’s- Food wise, this is a long event, so be sure to spread out your servings. Lot’s of easy finger foods that are low maintenance for you, so your not stuck in the kitchen. Keep it simple, use what you have, a big vase makes a great punch bowl, or ice bucket...Be sure to offer a non-alcoholic beverage option. For some strange reason I have not yet figured out there are people who don’t drink alcohol. I am not one of them...The best thing to do is make a Fabulous punch and have your alcohol on the side to be added if desired...This will cut your work load and budget down a great deal. Leaving you more money for shoe shopping...

AND THE OSCAR GOES TO...- Play the game...everyone does and it’s fun. Make up a sheet with the top 8 or so categories and have everyone choose who they think will win...Put together a few fun and fabulous gift bags for the winner (or winners if their is a tie...be prepared). You can also have a fun spot for best and worst dressed.

BEST DRESSED- To Glam or not to Glam that is the question...Be sure to specify what the attire is for the evening. Red carpet formal or shag carpet casual. The most important thing to be comfortable in what you wear and have fun...I love the idea of Over the Top Glam so anything goes...Nothing like walking the red carpet in a Snuggie with a feather boa,tiara...and of course a killer pair of shoes...

The 82cnd Annual Academy  Awards will be held on Sunday March 7th 2010, at 8pm on ABC. Hosted by Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin it is sure to be a blast.

The Show Must Go On...

Posted by Dee Brun in What to do...

Welcome to my virgin post for Toronto News 24...I am supposed to be blogging about Lifestyle...not quite sure what that all entails. But I do like life and I LOVE style. Not that my style is all that fabulous, but I do know I don’t have “BAD” style, this is according to my 70 year old male dry cleaner...I trust him.

Hope you enjoy reading what I have to say, if not I am sure you will tell me...

So with everything going on this month, car show, olympics, Tiger Woods’ press conference, what is one to do. At the top of my list is The National Home Show , it runs from Feb 19 - 28. Now this is a show about Fabulous Style...

With Ty Pennington as their spokes person and appearing live, you know it has to be a fun and exciting place to be...Not to mention the fact that he is a HAWTY...With more than 700 home and garden specialists you can be sure to find everything for your next project all under one roof. The show is full of fantastic celebrity guests on HGTV’s Little Project Stage. From City Line Unplugged, Scott McGillirvay Incom Property to ...well...Moi, The CocktailDeeva. You are sure to catch a great show and have a ton of fun.
You can even meet Make It Right Mike Holmes himself...cause we need to have a serious chat
about those overalls. Might have to hook him up with some tickets to fashion week.

There are even some special theme days through out the event. Mommy’s Day is Monday Feb. 22, there is a play area for the kids, presentations designed for moms and the first 250 moms get a goodie bag...mmm free goodies. Girl’s Night Out (my personal fave) is Thurs. Feb 25th, this night is all about entertaining and style. The first 250 women to the stage by 6pm also get a fabulous goodie bag. What also makes this night special is that I am on stage at 7:30 mixing up Divine Cocktails..(shameless plug).

Add Me As A Friend!!!!

Facebook friend requests.

Well, not true friend requests. These are the unsolicitated requests from people you don't know. Don't even have a "mutual friend". Don't even live in the same country. In some cases, you don't even speak the same language.

As I understand it, Facebook is a social networking community, where you can connect with people that you know, or knew long ago and lost touch with. It can also be useful to connect with people who share common interests, hobbies, passions, etc...(this is where those Fan Pages come in handy). I think it's great that we can now communicate with someone 10000 km away about a shared interest in arctic marine biology (or whatever else interests us). Then there are those who use Facebook for professional networking, seeking out people who are in similar or complimentary professions, looking for a little business quid pro quo. This is how I think Facebook intended the site to be used, people connecting with people, and forming (hopefully) a relationship that is beneficial to both parties.

When I signed up on Facebook, my intentions were quite clear as to how I was going to use it. I have no family in Toronto, save for my kids and their dad. Facebook is a great way for me to get daily snapshots of relatives. I know when a cousin is not well, how a niece or nephew is doing in school, hear about mishaps, misunderstandings, or missing a loved one. My friend list, very small, will remain that way. I'm not interested in having hundreds of friends on Facebook. I don't think I even know that many people, and my true, close friends I can count on one hand. I'm now getting to the point of all this, and I'll be very clear. I DO NOT accept a friend request from someone in Smalltown, Indiana, whose only Wall Posts consist of those applications such as "Farmville" or that virtual zoo, or anything else of that nature. In the space of 10 minutes one night, I received 5 friend requests. Only 5, you ask??? What the hell is your beef, you wonder??? My beef is, 5 requests from total strangers, you can't view their profile, their wall is game posts (with a few "Angie is now friends with so-and-so" thrown in), no uploaded photo, and not even a message, "Hi, we both have the same interests, let's be friends". I have to wonder what their motivation is. Collecting "Farmville" recruits for some absurd contest? Are they trying to be my friend to see what personal info I have on Facebook? Whatever it is, I don't buy into it. If you don't know me, you're not going to be my friend. Simple. Please waste someone else's time. I prefer to make my friends in person.... Then we can add each other on Facebook.

Star Trek and Reality Checks

Posted by Kimmie in Sci-Fi

Kimmie

I love "Star Trek". The movies and the series.

Now, I'm not a Trekkie. You will never see me at a Star Trek convention. I don't pull my curtains closed and prance around in Starfleet issue clothing. And I certainly can't detail every episode of all 5 series and 11 movies, but I love watching Star Trek. Over the years, it has been a great escape; a time to sit back and be entertained. "To boldly go where no man has gone before".

Starship Enterprise on Toronto News 24

After watching the latest Star Trek movie, (titled "Star Trek"), I realized how much I missed watching my guilty pleasure. I liked getting reconnected with my friends Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Uhura, Sulu, Chekov, and Scotty. Seeing them as young adults, starting out in Starfleet. Being let in on inside info(I now know why McCoy's nickname is "Bones", and Uhura's first name). But J.J. Abrams decided to insert/change a few details of his own. Seems like Spock and Uhura swapped spit long before Kirk and Uhura did it in the original series (Spock was also married when he joined the Enterprise). Spock's mother dies in the movie (sorry, spoiler alert), although in the original series, she was present whenever there was an emotional crisis for our logical Vulcan friend. Sulu, well adept in martial arts in the original, has fencing as his only combat skill. There are others, but for this movie to be distinct from the other movies, they are necessary. Does it detract from my enjoyment? No! I still loved it. Given the choice between Star Trek and reality TV, I'll gladly watch William Shatner over-act through every scene. Listen to Jean-Luc Picard speak with an English accent. Stare at Seven-of-nine in her skin-tight suit. Yes, she's a hot Borg, what can I say? I have no patience with reality TV. It's not real. Anyone who thinks so needs a reality check. When was the last time a group of people were stranded on an island and left to fend for themselves? No outside help?  "Survivor"? Liability issues would prevent that from happening. "Paris Hilton: My New BFF"? I thought that was Nicole Ritchie. I guess being a BFF only lasts as long as the ratings. Then there are shows like "Toddlers and Tiaras". Young children being paraded on stage to fulfill the desires of their parents. Maybe too real.

I enjoy watching "Star Trek". It's not real. It is pure escapism. I suppose that reality shows are also escapism, but I don't want to watch people who open their lives to millions of viewers for the sake of getting their 15 minutes of fame. I will gladly pop in a DVD, or watch the Space channel, put my feet up and watch my Star Trek. You know, "To seek out new life and new civilizations".

The "New" New Year's Resolutions

Posted by Kimmie in New Year Resolutions

Kimmie

I'm looking forward to 2010. I had a very good 2009 (a few bumps here and there, some major, most minor), so I see no reason for 2010 to be any different. As I reflect back on this past year, I realize that I didn't make any resolutions for 2009. Like I said, I had a very good year, but could it have been better?
