So I moved into my new dream home in November, leading right into the dead of winter. Now that spring has sprung and the sun is shinning their are strange green things starting to grow out of the ground. I have heard people refer to them as plants...what kind of plants, no clue. At our last home my husband and I hired a wonderful landscaper who came in and planted all those strange things know as plants. Made sure they had enough sun or shade, took the time to let us know that they were all LOW maintenance greenery. Just the kind of greenery we are looking for. In this new house, the previous owners were gardening enthusiasts and we have inherited their hobby. Oh happy day...

So I have been spending some time trying to get to know my new green friends and what I have to do to keep them around. During this time I have learned so much about the whole gardening culture...I can now grow my own mint for my Mojito’s..Oh happy day!...So I have put together a few of some really hot trends for gardening. Now I have no delusions of becoming some fabulous horticulturist...But it was a great opportunity to do a little digging and of course pick up a pair of really cute gardening shoes...

Simple Colour Schemes- 2 tone flower schemes seem to be the way to go now. This I can handle, with the shrubs being a solid green background, I can layer like a nice spring outfit..Yes bring it all back to fashion...lingo I an relate to.

Native is Best- I honestly had no clue what this meant...lost...I learned that is means to plant things that are native to your area. They tend to do better and support your local eco system in the proper way...good to know...

Grow What You Eat- when hearing this I was ready to pave it all and call it a driveway...Grow what I eat?...how do I grow a double cheese and bacon pizza? Once you step back and think on a smaller scale it is fun to think about growing something you can put on your place at dinner time...or in your glass at Happy Hour...Look into cherry tomatoes, small peppers and of course herbs for low maintenance family friendly options.

Mind the Water- anyone who knows me knows that I get very upset when I see people wasting water. After all, without water there would be no Vodka and that would be a very bad thing. So be sure to get a rain barrel, low flow sprinkles , lots of mulch and drought tolerant “native” plants...at least thats what my plant lady said.

Prepare the Soil- You need a good base...this is the boring part that I hate..I wanna just get it and make something happen...But you need good soil to grow good stuff...So this of the soil as your shoes...gotta start with FAB shoes and then work your way up!

Cheers and Happy Growing...
