Star Trek and Reality Checks

I love "Star Trek". The movies and the series.

Now, I'm not a Trekkie. You will never see me at a Star Trek convention. I don't pull my curtains closed and prance around in Starfleet issue clothing. And I certainly can't detail every episode of all 5 series and 11 movies, but I love watching Star Trek. Over the years, it has been a great escape; a time to sit back and be entertained. "To boldly go where no man has gone before".

Starship Enterprise on Toronto News 24

After watching the latest Star Trek movie, (titled "Star Trek"), I realized how much I missed watching my guilty pleasure. I liked getting reconnected with my friends Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Uhura, Sulu, Chekov, and Scotty. Seeing them as young adults, starting out in Starfleet. Being let in on inside info(I now know why McCoy's nickname is "Bones", and Uhura's first name). But J.J. Abrams decided to insert/change a few details of his own. Seems like Spock and Uhura swapped spit long before Kirk and Uhura did it in the original series (Spock was also married when he joined the Enterprise). Spock's mother dies in the movie (sorry, spoiler alert), although in the original series, she was present whenever there was an emotional crisis for our logical Vulcan friend. Sulu, well adept in martial arts in the original, has fencing as his only combat skill. There are others, but for this movie to be distinct from the other movies, they are necessary. Does it detract from my enjoyment? No! I still loved it. Given the choice between Star Trek and reality TV, I'll gladly watch William Shatner over-act through every scene. Listen to Jean-Luc Picard speak with an English accent. Stare at Seven-of-nine in her skin-tight suit. Yes, she's a hot Borg, what can I say? I have no patience with reality TV. It's not real. Anyone who thinks so needs a reality check. When was the last time a group of people were stranded on an island and left to fend for themselves? No outside help?  "Survivor"? Liability issues would prevent that from happening. "Paris Hilton: My New BFF"? I thought that was Nicole Ritchie. I guess being a BFF only lasts as long as the ratings. Then there are shows like "Toddlers and Tiaras". Young children being paraded on stage to fulfill the desires of their parents. Maybe too real.

I enjoy watching "Star Trek". It's not real. It is pure escapism. I suppose that reality shows are also escapism, but I don't want to watch people who open their lives to millions of viewers for the sake of getting their 15 minutes of fame. I will gladly pop in a DVD, or watch the Space channel, put my feet up and watch my Star Trek. You know, "To seek out new life and new civilizations".
