The Vancouver trio known as Elias have been making plenty of ground these last months. Their hit “All We Want” has received notable airplay on Toronto’s 102.1 the Edge, they’ve snagged a spot in Canadian Music Week, and they're set to take part in the Snocore Tour with Hawthorne Heights and Protest the Hero.
Brian Healy and Rob Tornroos have always found some way to create music side-by-side. Even when differences in taste emerged, the two understood what they wanted to do; make good music.
Newcomer, Stefan Tavares auditioned for the band and after a few head nods, Tavares landed the spot as Elias’ drummer. His vibe—a bit younger, but Tavares adds a key strength to the group as the constant beat holder.
Elias made headway in 2009, playing mood-shifting tracks like ‘Dropouts’ and ‘Thousand Pieces’ on MTV live. Their album, Lasting Distraction is simplistically jolting and rhythmically in-tune with what crowds crave; intensity.
When asked to explain a lasting distraction, lead singer Brian Healy pointed to music.
“Music can definitely be seen as a hobby, which can also be viewed as a distraction. It’s another form of expression, but it can also be a distraction from the everyday.”
Thankfully their shared distraction is forming tasteful music.
“Ideally we’d love to be making music and touring the world, living comfortably,” says Rob Tornroos. With the three Vancouverites liking acts such Taylor Swift, 30 Seconds to Mars, Dixie Chicks and Kings of Leon—its pretty evident the boys have a wide-spun list of artist checkmarks.
Elias have found a recipe for creating harmonic rock beats while letting the music speak for itself. It’s the kind of music you want to listen to while closing your eyes, absorbing the lyrical insertions and allowing the visual serenades to tingle with each blink.
So would the boys rather play Bowery Ballroom or Toronto’s ACC? Both Rob and Brian chose New York’s notorious music spot the Bowery, and Stefan held true to the Air Canada Centre. We expect they’ll do both
Elias play CMW on March 12th (7:40pm) at Tattoo Rock Parlour.
