Toronto, ON

TORONTO - Next time you're in the produce aisle at the grocery store, you may find yourself wondering if that pineapple or watermelon you plan on buying has been involved in drug trafficking.
The RCMP Drug Enforcement Sections of the GTA, New Brunswick and Windsor - along with the CBSA and various other agencies - have so far arrested 6 people (and more warrants issued for further arrests) for cocaine and marihuana related offences.
The investigation began when officers from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) seized a marine container concealing cocaine at a port in New Brunswick. The cocaine was located in hollowed out pineapples ( a waste of perfectly good fruit). 19 kgs of cocaine was seized from 80 pineapples scattered throughout the shipment, and initial inquiries linked a Toronto-area address to the container.
Over the next four months, the RCMP was able to identify suspects involved in this particular endeavour and further shipments of drugs.
Information provided to CBSA officers at the Windsor port of entry led them to intercept 2 trucks, each containing 115 kg of marihuana, with the drugs located in the packaging surrounding shipments of watermelons.
Continued investigation by the RCMP found that this group had ties to co-conspirators in Jamaica, Guyana, Costa Rica and the USA.
"Drug dealers will stop at nothing to get their contraband into this country," stated Superintendent Rick Penney, RCMP GTA Drug Enforcement Commander.
The following people were arrested and are facing drug-related charges:
They are scheduled to appear on Wednesday, January 25th, 2012 at Old City Hall Courthouse in Toronto for bail hearings.
Despite efforts, the hollowed out pineapples were deemed inedible, and there is speculation that they may have gone into hiding in some compost pile.
The watermelons were released on their own recognizance with a promise to appear in the local grocery store.
